Surveys

Understand that my surveys are more detailed than most. I feel that by mentioning and including all pertinent information on a particular item, professionalism and credibility are added to my survey.
Some surveyors are able to inspect a 30’ Vessel in one day and supply a survey later the next day. While some of these Surveyors use technology that enables them to do so, others are taking shortcuts at the buyer’s expense. Always request a sample of the surveyors work. If he/she is not willing to share a sample survey, chances are there is a reason. I have seen people pay big dollars for a three to five page survey which probably wouldn’t be accepted by most insurance companies. I will be glad to supply a sample survey for a vessel similar to the one you are having surveyed. The survey will be e-mailed for your review upon request. Also, if a surveyor does not have the technology to directly e-mail you digital pictures, surveys and pertinent internet information, that should raise a red flag.
Also, beware of discount surveyors who are priced lower than others or will negotiate price to secure the survey. Generally you get what you pay for. Surveyors are busy professionals. If you find a surveyor who will survey the vessel and generate the survey in a 24 hour time frame there’s a good reason and one you don’t want to be part off. Most of us are booked weeks out in the busy seasons. A typical 30’ vessel regardless of age and condition will require at least the better part of a day to survey. Older vessels take longer to survey than one a few years old. Per Purchase and Insurance Surveys require at least a day and a half or more to compile.
All surveys should be surveyed to the following codes - U.S.C.G. Federal Requirements, NFPA - National Fire & Protection Association and ABYC- American Boat & Yacht Council recommendations.
For a marine survey to be accepted by the majority of Insurance companies the surveyor must be a member of SAMS - Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors or NAMS
